Lisbeth Zwerger

Lisbeth Zwerger has illustrated The Wizard of Oz. She has also illustrated The Brothers Grimm/ Little Red-Cap amongst others such as Thumbaline, Swan lake,Alice in WounderLand and many others. My style is very similar to hers as i draw quite loose showing quick, squigley markings. All of her work from each book she has illustrated are unique. She ses great compositions, sometimes just hinting background, not quite giving us all the detail. Her colour palet and medium always seem so compatible giving us the most impact of her quality of drawing. She often uses very earthy, realistic colours.

Lisbeth created her own abstract characters for The Wizard of Oz. The`re some how quirky but yet mysterious in a way also. Each characters is totally different from the next; different shape, size, colour. here are some examples.

Patrick Benson

Looking at all of his illustrations there is something about them all that seems similar. All the main figures/animals seem to stand out from the background, mainly no foreground. For example,'The Sea Thing Child' the background seems very distant and seems to frame it slightly with horizontal and vertical imagary. Were the foreground is up close and very visibal.

Another one i like is 'Mole and the Baby Bird'. The path is leedind us from one of two important imagary, the mole,to the background to the other main image of the house. I have chosen Patrick as i feel that he will be a great influence to me for my compostion.

Emma Chichester Clark

When researching upon Emma`s work i was greeted by a warm sensation. i no it sounds a bit strange but i sometime got it when my mum used to read me book when i was a child. I always felt snug and warm by the imagary; and as a child it is imported that 'we' had some kind of conection with the imagary to keep concentration and to be involved within the story.
These are some examples of her work.

One of my favourates was the 'Blue Kangaroo'. Its so pretty and pink; something i would defentaly by my daughter.
I think the compostion is great as the curtains frame the little girl who is cusioned by presents.
Over all, her use of colour looks carefully chosen which will influence me to select correct colour in my project. For example, 'Blue K angaroo' has selected shades of pink and blue with hints of green which as o whole comes together nicely.

Bernie Prendergast

I came across this artist by chance of researching upon illustration.
I was astonished at the quality of he detail and composition of his figures. I love the figure, drawing it, looking at drawings of, trying to understand the complicated shapes that form the figure. Also the face and facual expression.
Prendergast has seemed to capture this realness in his work. we, the viewer are able to feel the emotion that the expression of the person is giving.
His image, The Pipe, is so over powering with the total darkness, only highlighting an old mans face and hand with a pipe produces this brilliant composition, complimented by the rich quality of detail that gives us a great discription of the characteristics from the lines and wrinkles upon his face.
Another, the man in the chair which gives us a view of slightly looking up at the figure giving us an impression that this man is almost giant like. Again with his fantastic quality of detail. The images above are done with charcoal which is one of my favourate medias i like to use.
Maybe i could use charcoal although " The Wizard of Oz" is known for its fantastic colour.
These are some more examples of his work in different media.

Although these are done in a different media they still have his great quality but with a touch of colour. I think these will be a great influence in my project. the twisting trees will be a great start to produce my own trees to form a forest which is in one of my illustrations for "Oz".

Jan Pienkowski

I have always loved Pienkowski`s illustrations from when my mum read 'Meg and Mog' to me when i was a child. The dark cilloetts are greatly contrast with the bold, block colours. The characters always seemed quirky to me, ie sometimes Mog didnt have arms, just this up side down,pear- shaped body with long drawn lines to represent fur. One other thing that still confuses me is that from a side profile Megs head always was cut in half, showing the background between the lines of her hair.
The drawings seem so simple yet unique.

He has also illustrated a book called The Fairy Tales which i can research to influence and give me ideas for style to illustrate my "Oz" ideas. Maybe i could come up with some cilloett figures to represent my characters with splashes of relevent colour in the background.
He has produced some amazing images which can be appreciated by many ages.

The book of fairy tales based on Brothers Grim illustrated by Jan Pienkowski is amazing. You, the viewer are automatically drawn into the detailed cilloets and brightly coloured background.I have chose to show some imagary that will influence my layout of The Wizard of Oz.

I conclude by saying that all the above will infuence me to produce strong imagary and select the correct colour, composition and style of drawing. I am yet to find my own style but from the above research of work and style will defently help me to create my own.
