I came across this artist by chance of researching upon illustration.
I was astonished at the quality of he detail and composition of his figures. I love the figure, drawing it, looking at drawings of, trying to understand the complicated shapes that form the figure. Also the face and facual expression.
Prendergast has seemed to capture this realness in his work. we, the viewer are able to feel the emotion that the expression of the person is giving.
His image, The Pipe, is so over powering with the total darkness, only highlighting an old mans face and hand with a pipe produces this brilliant composition, complimented by the rich quality of detail that gives us a great discription of the characteristics from the lines and wrinkles upon his face.
Another, the man in the chair which gives us a view of slightly looking up at the figure giving us an impression that this man is almost giant like. Again with his fantastic quality of detail. The images above are done with charcoal which is one of my favourate medias i like to use.
Maybe i could use charcoal although " The Wizard of Oz" is known for its fantastic colour.
These are some more examples of his work in different media.
Although these are done in a different media they still have his great quality but with a touch of colour. I think these will be a great influence in my project. the twisting trees will be a great start to produce my own trees to form a forest which is in one of my illustrations for "Oz".
